A graduate of the University of San Diego where he ran cross country, Scott Bergen regularly writes on the NFL for SoCal Sports Hub. A professional writer and editor, he has written and produced sports for CBS and KCAL in Los Angeles as well as Vootage.com. Though born in Connecticut, Scott has lived in Los Angeles for nearly his entire sports-fan-life but his allegiances still lie with mostly New York teams, primarily the Mets and Giants, though as a child he became a Kings and Clippers fan, thus making nearly all of the last two-and-a-half decades excruciating.

NFL Playoff Scenarios

11 teams are still alive in the AFC, with only four being assured of a spot in the playoffs. The other seven are basically already in a playoff-of sorts, where if they lose, they're out and if they win, they may still be. The NFC is more organized. Barely. We know which six teams will be playing, but only one ... 31Dec2009 | Scott Bergen | 1 comment | Continued

NFL Week 14 Hangover

The Vikings joined the Colts and Saints as division champs in Week 14, but the Cardinals were unable to do so in the NFC West after they sleep-walked through their game against the 49ers on Monday night.  There were only two notable changes of position in Week 14: the Jaguars lost to Miami and fell out of an AFC Wild Card position ... 16Dec2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 13 Hangover

Two NFL divisions are officially over after Week 13.  Three more are unofficially over, and that leaves three other divisions and seven playoff spots in total turmoil.  Here's a look at what's settled and what's still up for grabs. AFC - Settled AFC South Champions - Indianapolis Colts (12-0)   AFC - Up For Grabs Top seed - Indianapolis leads the race for the AFC's ... 8Dec2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 12 Hangover

We know the Colts, Saints, and Vikings are in the playoffs, with only seeding yet to be determined.  The Colts already clinched the AFC South with five game remaining, but the Saints are still a game away from doing so in the NFC South.  The Vikings can wrap up the NFC North with a win ... 1Dec2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 10 Hangover

With Week 10 behind us, all 32 teams have had a bye week and are even in games played.  As the weather turns cold (in other places, not so much here in Southern California), the playoff races will start to heat up.  Here's a look at where they stand today and, in ... 17Nov2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 10 Preview

Week 10 started off early as the Bears traveled to Candlestick to the take on the 49ers on Thursday night, and that game wound up being a microcosm of what the rest of the week looks like it may shape up to be: almost completely unwatchable football.  Besides the two games of ... 13Nov2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 8 Preview

Week 8 features five fantastic games: divisional rivalry games, battles between playoff favorites, bad blood. And then there are the rest: likely blowups, bad teams playing bad teams, likely naps. Sadly, Fox and CBS are sticking L.A. viewers with probably the worst two games Sunday morning. Fox chose ... 30Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 1 comment | Continued

NFL Preview: Week 7

Game of the Week: Minnesota Vikings (6-0) at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) 10 AM - Fox The Steelers have been pretty unstoppable in the air, and the Vikings are ranked 24th against the pass, so Ben Roethlisberger may have a huge day.  Rashard Mendenhall has been banged up in practice this week, meaning Pittsburgh's ... 23Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 6 Hangover

New Orleans Saints 48 – New York Giants 27 The formerly #1 ranked Giants defense allowed the Saints to score touchdowns on five of six first half possessions, gaining over 300 yards in the process. And though the Giants kept them in check for most of the second half, this one was never ... 20Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Preview: Week 6

Game of the Week: Giants (5-0) at Saints (4-0) 10AM - Fox The undefeated Saints and their high powered offense are just 3.5 point favorites at home, after a bye week, against a quarterback with a bad foot and a secondary missing most of its starters, so either the odds makers aren't sold ... 16Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 5 Hangover

Miami Dolphins 31 - New York Jets 27 The Dolphins and Jets seem to have a knack for making memorable Monday Night games and this one was no different.  It was a battle of two of the league's up-and-coming franchise rookie quarterbacks.  It was a battle of the Wildcat vs. Rex Ryan's blitz ... 13Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 4 Hangover

When you go to an L.A. sports bar on a Sunday morning in the fall, you'll find a veritable rainbow of jerseys because there's no home team to root for.  Southern California is a sports mecca for all major sports but the NFL.  We have two NBA teams, three MLB teams, two NHL ... 5Oct2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 3 Hangover

New York Giants 24 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 0 Rumors of the demise of the Giants' running game seem to have been greatly exaggerated.  The end of Byron Leftwich's career may be close at hand, however.  The Giants' defense held the Bucs without a first down until late in the third quarter.  Leftwich ... 28Sep2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

NFL Week 2 Hangover – 9/21/09

Denver 27, Cleveland 6 By nearly all accounts, the quarterbacks traded between the Broncos and the Bears in the off-season were not in the same league.  Apparently no one told Kyle Orton that he was supposedly the bad one.  Orton and the Broncos kept the momentum up from last week's miraculous win in Cincinnati ... 21Sep2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

Hardball Weekly 6/15/09 – Championship Week Edition

With Titles being handed out in the NBA (yawn) and the NHL (in spectacular fashion) last week, it seems appropriate to discuss SoCal baseball with the World Series in mind. Wanted: Season-Saving Rally Monkey Ervin Santana's much anticipated return to the Angels has not gone as the team hoped.  He is 0-2 with a 9.50 ERA (31 runs allowed in four games), but he isn't much worse than the rest of the Angels right now.  Hovering just one game over .500, the injury-riddled ... 1Jun2009 | Scott Bergen | 0 comments | Continued

Hardball Weekly 5/18/09

On Pace For 64 Homers (That'd Be The Record, Right?)
