Manny Exercises Option; Returns for 2010 Season
Manny Ramirez wasted no time, announcing he will not opt out of his two-year contract so he can remain in the Dodgers’ fold for 2010. Agent Scott Boras confirmed the announcement. It was widely accepted that Manny would return, knowing that his value would be at its lowest after a year in which he was suspended for using a banned substance and put up mediocre numbers upon his return. Manny signed a two-year deal with a built-in opt-out clause for the second year during Spring Training this season with the Dodgers, the first year worth $25 million and the second worth $20 million. The suspension cut out approximately $7 million of that total.
The decision slightly eases the Dodgers’ burden this off-season. With holes in the rotation and at secondbase, LA could not afford to deal with Manny’s hijinks as well.

This is being reported as news everywhere but was there really any doubt? Manny would be lucky to get $15 million in free agency this year. He’ll get about a million bucks per homer next year and hit .250ish.

Well, as usual a bunch of silly Dodger fans were insistent that Manny’s return was a clear indication that he loves playing in Los Angeles and cherishes the Southern California fans. But ya, it’s merely because he wouldn’t gotten the same earnings on the open market. I think all rational baseball fans understand that.
