Game 44: Tigers 2, Angels 1
There isn’t a whole lot to say about the Angels’ 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. Essentially, the offense didn’t show up. They combined for just one runs and four hits against Detroit’s Edwin Jackson, who went on to throw a complete game on merely 109 pitches.
The Angels got all of their scoring in their first inning when Bobby Abreu’s double scored Chone Figgins to give the Angels the early one run lead. But after Kelvim Escobar surrendered two runs in the bottom of the first, the Halos fell behind 2-1 and were never able to recover. So much for that much improved offense.
Here are some thoughts:
- While it was a frustrating loss, there are still some things for Angel fans to be excited about. After spending over the first two months on the disabled list, Kelvim Escobar performed well in his first start of the season. Escobar pitched through five innings, allowing just four hits and two runs. He also managed to strike out five batters.
- Once again, the Angel batters showed little patience at the plate and it allowed Edwin Jackson to have a field day. Jackson was able to average just 12 pitches an inning, and as a result, he was able to go strong for 9 full innings.
- The sluggers were a no show. The big sluggers, Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, and Kendry Morales, went 1-for-11 combined. You’ll need more production than that from your 3-4-5 guys.
