Game 2: Athletics 6, Angels 4
Dustin Moseley did his part to build upon what Joe Saunders accomplished in Monday’s Opener, but the Angels’ offense couldn’t come through in a tough loss against the division rival A’s.
The Angels got to A’s rookie pitcher Trevor Cahill early, but after he settled down, the Halos had a tough time getting anything going, leaving a total of 10 men on base during Tuesday night’s game. Getting 8 hits on the night isn’t bad, but the team needs to work on scoring runs and seizing opportunities when their opponents present them.
The Halos’ bullpen showed a rare sign of weakness early in the season as well, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while getting smacked with the loss (which went to Kevin Jepsen).
Some thoughts from Tuesday’s game:
- Dustin Moseley may not be as bad as we all thought. He gave up a ton of hits, but made good pitches when he needed to and gave the Angels a quality start. Things might not be as bad on the starting pitching front as we all thought.
- Juan Rivera needs to break his career trend of slow starts, or he’s going to find himself out of a job. Leaving the bases loaded in the 1st inning against a nervous rookie making his MLB debut does not look good.
- Kendry Morales looked much better tonight, too. Once he settles in, Angels fans will be pleasantly surprised with what he has to offer.

Ya, I don’t feel you can pin this loss on Moseley. He allowed just 3 runs over 6 innings. It’s not outstanding, but it should be good enough to get the job done. Tonight’s loss is all on the offense. J-Riv can’t fly out with the bases load in the first inning. I know a lot of people talk about how the Angels need a “big bat,” but don’t they just need somebody who can hit with runners in scoring position. They use to be better at that.
