Vlad Guerrero is Suddenly a Year Older
Last month it was revealed that Washington Nationals prospect Carlos David Alvarez Lugo had lied about his name and age in order to earn a bigger signing bonus from the Nats. Lugo, who is actually 23 years of age, claimed to be Esmailyn “Smiley” Gonzalez and just 19 years old. That’s a big difference.
But Lugo isn’t the only major leaguer from the Dominican Republic to have lied about his age. Last season, it was revealed that Astros shortstop Migue Tejada was actually two years older; he had claimed he was born in 1976 when he was actually born in 1974. And others such as Bartolo Colón, Rafael Furcal, and Adrián Beltré, were also found to have lied about their ages at somepoint during their careers.
Now, you can throw Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero into that exclusive club. Yesterday, Vladdy annonced that he is actually a year older than his listed birth date. Now he is one of hundreds of players from the Dominican Republic who have faked their ages when signing their first contracts with major-league teams.
There have been some aging theories about Vlad, but at least it’s only a difference between 33 and 34, and not 4 years like Lugo. Even at 34, I still look for Vlad to put up some monster numbers this year.
