SoCal WCC Weekly Recap (9/22/08)
The West Coast Conference’s only member with a football program is San Diego, but luckily the Toreros do enough winning to make up for it. They travelled to Buies Creek, North Carolina to take on Campbell University in their Pioneer League Opener. The game was Campbell’s second league game in history as they joined the Pioneer League over the summer. The Toreros offered the Camels a rude welcome, racking up 448-yards of total offense and shutting them down defensively in a 43-7 rout. Sophomore running back Phil Morelli, in his first start filling in for injured All-American J.T. Rogan, rushed for 151 yards and three scores on just 21 carries. The Toreros held the overmatched Camels to just 8-yards of rushing. Next up, the Toreros head to De Moines, Iowa to take on another of the PFL favorites, the Drake Bulldogs.
In Men’s Soccer, the Loyola Marymount Lions headed to the Chicago Soccer Classic, and took on #9 Northwestern and nearly pulled off the massive upset on Saturday, losing 1-0. Then on Sunday, the Lions faced the host school, #11 Illinois-Chicago and pulled off a scoreless tie. San Diego stayed at home this weekend but also faced brutal competition, losing to #23 UC Davis on a penalty kick in double-overtime, having played most of the game down a man after a red card midway through the first half. On Sunday the Toreros hosted #37 UC Irvine and lost another close one, 1-0. The Pepperdine Waves were idle this week.
In Women’s Soccer, #24 San Diego was at the UCLA Women’s Cup and drew 0-0 ties with New Mexico Friday, and with #19 Miami Saturday. The Toreros are now unbeaten in seven consecutive games. Pepperdine traveled to Wisconsin this weekend, taking a tough loss at Wisconson-Madison 3-1 and then drawing a 0-0 tie at Marquette. LMU traveled to the Oklahoma State Tournament in Stillwater, Oklahoma and took a 4-0 beating from their ungracious hosts, the #13 Cowboys. They bounced back on Sunday, defeating Oral Roberts 4-1.
Tuesday was a good day for WCC women’s volleyball, as LMU knocked off UC Santa Barbara at home 3-1 and #17 San Diego cruised past UC Riverside 3-0 at home as well. Pepperdine hosted a tournament over the weekend and also gave Santa Barbara a good beating on Friday, winning 3-0 before matching that score against Texas State and Cal State Northridge on Saturday. LMU also hosted their own tournament, beating Houston 3-0 on Friday before being swept out themselves by #30 Arizona. San Diego traveled to Seattle for the Husky Fever classic and was trounced by the hosts, #10 Washington 3-0. The Toreros rebounded well in coming back to crush Seattle on Saturday, 3-0.
Pepperdine’s Cross Country teams headed to Oahu for the Big Wave Invitational and both squads came home with some hardware, the women finishing third behind UCAL and San Diego State, and the men second only to UCLA. The Waves will head to Palo Alto for the world famous Stanford Invitational next weekend, as will LMU who were idle last week. San Diego, also idle last week, will run at the UC Riverside Invitational this weekend.
