Everyone Loves Vin Scully

Vin Scully59 seasons spent as the Dodgers’ broadcaster has cemented Vin Scully as one of the greatest of all time. His voice in Major League Baseball has been heard from both coasts, it has so eloquently relayed the tales of Jackie Robinson, delivered so artistically the art of Sandy Koufax, and so wonderfully brought joy to millions of fans. So often have we sat in anticipation of the Dodgers to take the field and felt that rush of excitement when Scully delivers his, “it’s time for Dodger baseball.”

Already his accomplishments are inarguable. In 1982 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as the Ford C. Frick Award recipient. In July 2000, more than 500 national members of the American Sportscasters Association voted Scully the top sportscaster of the 20th century. This month, however, he will be honored three more times.

On April 6, he will be inducted into the California Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, April 26, he will give the Seaver College Commencement address at Pepperdine University. The exercise will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is held on the Pepperdine campus in Malibu.

On Tuesday, April 29, he will be honored by WFUV 90.7 FM, Fordham University’s radio station at their 60th Anniversary celebration from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in New York.

“I’m deeply grateful for these honors and consider myself extremely fortunate,” said Scully. “I was at Fordham when they started their FM radio station 60 years ago so I consider it a real privilege to have been there at the beginning.”

As fans of this great game, we are very fortunate to be witness to one of the greatest voices in all of sports, let alone baseball. There are 150 plus games left to be played in 2008. There will be great memories and probably a lot more terrible heartache to behold, but through it all sit back and appreciate how lucky we are to have Vinny there to soften the blows.
